Have you heard the term niche website or niche marketing? This has to do with breaking your general site idea down to a much more targeted market. But there does come a time that you can make that niche too small.

First of all you need to research the keyword idea. Some obscure niche’s can bring you money. If there are 3 people a month looking for aluminum dog boxes and there are only 10 sites specializing in them. You may have a market if those dog boxes sell for a high markup. However if you are selling handpainted mailboxes of flamingos and 3 people search for them a month, there are 3000+ sites to choose from and you barely make a few cents on the product, then it is a niche that is not a smart choice.

Choosing a profitable niche is of course a major decision and can make or break a site. But, there are many ways to tweak that niche down the road. So do not trash the site if it does not make money immediately.

Not everyone is a potential customer for a given product or service. Smart business owners key into their niche – the particular, well-defined segment of the population that will have interest in what is being sold. In other words, the actual buyers of your product.

In order to be effective, adwords campaigns must address the advertiser’s niche. This requires an in-depth understanding of who comprises the market and why they buy, and a tightly focused keyword list. If you do not know your market you will end up spending a lot money uselessly.

• Who is buying the product or service you offer? Successful advertisers develop a profile of their typical customer. Keywords, titles, and descriptions must appeal to this person. A car restorer would be more likely to click thru an ad for “body shop supplies”, for example, than just “hand tools”.

Reaching the right market – the niche – is necessary to avoid the cost associated with clicks by people who are not likely to buy. Advertisers should strive to avoid viewers who will click but not buy, because they will pay a higher CPC without attaining sales to balance the expense. Low conversion rates are one way to recognize that ads are reaching too broad a market.

• Why do they buy? Marketing experts suggest that purchasing decisions are made for one of three reasons: to fulfill a basic need, to solve a problem, or to create positive feelings about the self. Adwords campaigns should communicate specifically what need will be satisfied, problem solved, or self-image achieved through the purchase.

As you know viewers are given pages of hits when they enter a search. You need to give potential customers a compelling reason to choose your ad over another. Effective ad titles will increase click-thru rates. The result of these two steps is a lower CPC and a better qualified lead.

To zero in more closely on the niche market, advertisers can employ negative keywords. These are the words that, when included in a viewer’s search, will cause the ad NOT to appear. Developing an accurate list of negative keywords involves several steps. First, using a keyword research tool, enter the keywords chosen for the advertiser’s website. A list of phrases commonly searched that contain those words will be produced. An advertiser selling scrapbook supplies, for instance, might find that the search phrase “scrapbook layouts” is frequently used. The negative keyword “layouts” would then prevent the ad from showing when a viewer wants an image instead of the supplies.

Keyword phrase matching further ensures the ad will reach the right viewers. Variations in spelling, common misspellings, interchanged words, and the use of singular and plural forms of keywords allow the maximum number of potential customers to receive the ad in response to a search.

Knowing one’s niche and reaching that segment of the market can enhance an advertiser’s success with Adwords campaigns.

You may think that having a successful business is based around how much marketing or advertising someone does, how well they handle customer service, or some other reason. You may be surprised to learn that having a profitable business can simply come down to determining what your target market wants and what their needs are.

Your target market is the group of people that you are marketing your products and services to. Not everyone will want to buy your product or service. For instance, all women do not need the same supplements.

There are some women that need help for fibromyalgia, and there are some who will need pre-natals, and there are others who only want multi-vitamins. And then there are the women that need extra calcium or what have you. The point is, different segments of the population want and need different things.

To be successful, you will need to determine what your target market wants and needs, and then you will want to provide it for them. If you happen to be in your target market, you are off to a good start. You can start thinking about the things you want.

Now, if you are not directly a part of your target market, you can start off by putting yourself in their shoes. What do you think they would want? Picture yourself living a day in their life and imagine what types of products or services could make their lives easier. You have to make sure that you have narrowed down to a niche market before you can hit what your target wants however. Otherwise there are just too many possibilities and you will get off track.

You can also study the competition. Look at other products that are aimed at your target market and compare your products or services. What features and benefits can you offer that will give you an edge over the competition?

Try to find some websites that are dedicated to your target market and spy on them through the websites’ forums. You can learn a lot about your target market and what they are looking for by using this tactic. Or join their newsletter list. Don’t think that they won’t join yours if they find it. All the big names do the same with secret shoppers, so take after them.

Don’t forget to simply ask your target market what they want. You can create a form on your website that asks some basic questions about their needs and what they would like to see in the type of product or service you offer. Start asking your visitors or the people on your mailing list to fill out the questionnaire. You can give away an ebook or other product as an incentive to help you with the survey.

This is a great way to find out exactly what your target market wants and needs. Once you have that data, you can create the product or service to fill their needs. Since you already have their names and email addresses (from when they filled out the form in the first place), you can email them and let them know when the new product is ready. This could be a great way to jump start your sales.

You will find that some internet marketers choose to work exclusively with niche marketing. A niche market is a highly targeted group of people. For instance, if you sell furniture that is a wide market. But choosing to build a site around tv lifts is a niche market.

There is a big difference between the two. If you do not carry tv lifts, the smaller niche market will not buy from you. And if you only carry tv lifts, there will be people in the wider target market who will not buy from you.

The reason internet marketers like to work with niche markets is having the opportunity to be the only carrier of a product that will fit that niche market’s needs. It may take some work, but if you can find a niche and offer a product or service to them, you have the opportunity to sell a lot of products or services. It is also easier for SEO purposes. You gear your site to certain keywords.

Start researching your own interests and see what comes up. Or take your target market and find out if there is a product or service that a highly targeted number of them need, but can’t seem to find. I prefer to take something I am interested in and then narrow it down to a certain line of products or services. For example, I prefer to work with Mom’s because that is what I am and know. But I target Mom’s for their wellness needs on Busy Momma Wellness. That makes a smaller niche than just Mom’s. I’ve targeted Mom’s that are interested in taking care of themselves.

You can use services like Wordtracker to determine which keywords and phrases are being searched the most often. For instance, if your target market is people that home school their children, and you plan on having a niche site about creating lesson plans, you can use the service to see which type of lesson plans are the most sought after.

Not only will you want to take notice of how many searches are being performed, you will want to see how many competing pages there are. Your best bets in niche marketing will be to find a phrase that is searched on a lot, but doesn’t have many competing pages.

In addition to this type of research, you can also set up a campaign amongst your own customers and mailing list and simply ask them what type of products or services they would like to see you offer. This can give you some great ideas that you may not have thought of yourself.

As you start to develop ideas about which niche you would like to focus on, start taking notice of your competition. Study the products and services they offer, the features and benefits of these products, and their price points. This will help you develop your product. What are the things you can improve upon? How can you make your product more unique? How can you provide more benefits to the user or how can you make your product more affordable?

Once you have settled upon a niche and developed a product or service, you will need to develop a website and start promoting your item(s). You can then think of more products and services to offer to this same niche or you can start the process over and find a new niche to market to. I highly recommend finding more products in that same niche. Once you have your customers signed up on a newsletter list, you will want to give them more of what they are already looking for.
